We made it to Boracay! The island we wanted to live on! We've been here for about 3 weeks now...I think. It's so hard to remember what happened when or what day it is here because since we really don't have anything to do except hang out...it all pretty much runs together...haha. Anyway, the island is bigger than we thought, but still small. When we first got here the weather was wonderful and we thought to ourselves..."if this is the rainy season, we're set!" BUT, that was then and now it's officially rainy. Although it's nice and cool...it's not sunshine and hot laying on the beach. Right now it probably rains at least 3 to 4 times a day and usually once or twice really hard. The best part is when you're walking around, running to the market and what not, and your hands are full of groceries and such and the bottom decides to drop out and you're left to walk home in a torrential down pour. But if your lucky, like Rodney and I recently were, you'll be on your way home from a nice overcast day of walking on the beach and the wind will start blowing and the rain starts falling and it feels like your getting hit with sewing needles. Luckily everyone is so nice here and no one minds if you pop in their store, bar, or hotel and wait out the storm. It's also the perfect excuse to sit and enjoy a nice cool San Miguel with a front row seat to some crazy weather...which I LOVE!
We also have these things called brown outs...which are just black outs. And when the power goes out...it is DARK. But, thanks to Mike Bost (thanks daddy!!!) our weather ready flash light comes in very handy and always has a charge! Usually the brown outs only last about 30 min. but our last one lasted for 2 hours. After about an hour Rodney and I decided to take a walk (with our weather ready flash light) and check out the beach. Some people have generators but most use lanterns and battery operated lights to keep their businesses running. We stopped by the little store around the corner from our house and got some veggies to cook dinner then made our way down the beach to Balero to have a chat with our friends Don, Rockie and Ley. We helped Don celebrate his 38th birthday, Filipino style, the night before...pics and VIDEO will be posted. We got a chance to eat chicken brains and Rodney got his first chance to eat Balute! I was so proud of him. It was a GREAT time.
The place we've found to live in is really cute and only about a 1 to 1.5 min. walk from the beach! It's a small 2 bedroom house that we share with an Australian man (David) and his Filipino girlfriend (Jenny), who is 7 months pregnant with twins! Rodney and I have our own private bedroom and bathroom and we share a decent sized kitchen. We don't have hot water, but we do have a WASHING MACHINE!!! which is definitely 1,000,000,000 times better than doing it by hand! I'll pass up hot water any day :) I'll also post a video of a semi virtual tour of our place.
Lastly, there's the issue of finding a job. We've spent a couple of days passing out resumes to resorts and hotels, but have not had a response yet. Of all the places we've been...only maybe 3 have not looked at us like we're crazy. The idea here is that if you are white, you are rich. We had one lady ask us if we were hotel owners and "why do you come to the Philippines to find work?" Like you guys are NUTS! But still, Rodney and I are very hopeful and are still ticking away at the job search. Hopefully something will come up at some point.
